Community Sponsorship: How it works and how to get involved Community Sponsorship empowers community groups who come together to support refugee families arriving in Ireland. These groups are supported by the National Support Organisation (NSO), comprising the Irish Refugee Council, Nasc, Doras, and the Red Cross. Each Community Sponsorship group commits to welcoming and supporting a family resettled in Ireland under the Irish Refugee Protection Programme. Their support begins with a warm Irish welcome at the airport and extends to ongoing cultural orientation, integration assistance, and befriending. What Does the Support Involve? Duration: Groups provide support for up to two years. Financial Assistance: Groups fundraise at least €10,000 (up to €2,000 can be in-kind contributions) to address the family’s integration needs. Housing: Groups secure housing for 24 months, often leveraging Housing Assistance Payments. Local Integration: Activities include: Helping the family connect with their new community. Assisting with essential documentation. Supporting access to medical, social, and other services. Facilitating English language learning, access to education or employment based on the family’s needs. Why Get Involved? Community Sponsorship offers a deeply rewarding experience for volunteers, fostering solidarity, cultural exchange, and a renewed sense of community. Participants often speak about the joy of sharing traditions, music, sports, and faith while upholding Ireland’s long tradition of hospitality.
