Resettlement

The Irish Refugee Council provides support to individuals and families brought to Ireland under the Irish Refugee Protection Programme. People who are resettled in Ireland are already recognised as refugees, having received their status from UNCHR. Ireland’s resettlement programme has focussed on Syrian people, who were either in Lebanon or Jordan. We work together with local communities into which they are resettling helping to ensure a smooth transition to life in Ireland. Our resettlement work includes:
Advocacy

Assisting resettled and relocated Syrian refugees with information about living in Ireland and advocacy for family reunification and access to housing.

Integration

Identifying the particular needs of refugees resettled in Ireland both during the initial orientation period in Emergency Reception and Orientation Centres and after transfer to more long-term accommodation around the country.

Assistance and support

Providing a direct service to resettled refugees where there is an absence of support from local organisations, particularly in relation to family reunification.

Research and training

Identifying the practice and policy trends arising from work with resettled refugees and proposing ways in which we should engage in the monitoring and development of better practice in relation to refugee resettlement. Gathering information about best practice on refugee resettlement in other EU states and outside of the EU, in particular in the USA & Canada and developing policy positions for the IRC on refugee resettlement.
