Asylum Process Reform

At the Irish Refugee Council, we strive for an Ireland where people who claim asylum are treated with humanity and dignity. An Ireland where Direct Provision ends and is replaced by a system that gives privacy, supports integration and builds agency. We work to ensure Ireland continues to expand pathways to safety for people fleeing persecution around the world. We believe Ireland has a unique leadership role to play amidst Europe’s crisis of leadership on refugee issues, with human rights at its heart.

Our advocacy and policy work is and continues to be based on sound research and present constructive solutions. Fundamentally, the voice and experience of people in the asylum system is at the fore of our work and we will actively pursue inclusion. We facilitate, support, guide and learn from the diverse and vibrant civil society responses to people seeking asylum in Ireland, working closely with our traditional partners and supporting new movements and ideas.

We work towards legislative & policy change for a fair asylum system advocating for:
  • A reduction in delays in the asylum procedure
  • Best practice at all International Protection Office customer service meetings
  • Ireland to opt in to the Optional Protocol on the Convention Against Torture
  • The right to work to be as expansive and unrestricted as possible
  • Access to early legal advice for people seeking asylum
  • Continued support and assistance to children, young people and LBGT people seeking asylum
